My typical day involves performing triage on any library IT issues that have arisen i.e., can I solve the problem; does it need to go to our IT department or is it something a vendor needs to look at? After I finish this for example is i have to investigate why the BSU Institution repository is not working if it’s down or it’s down time is abnormal. Why
is EBSCOhost admin interface not providing Counter 5 Reports and why JSTOR is not accessible on our student PCs and find solution if possible?
At the start of the semester, I train the students in information literacy skills using the
resources subscribed by the university through the consortium based model of acquisition and outside. I have to ensure that users can search and retrieve resources. There is also ongoing projects that include management of our KOHA ILS and Monitoring and Evaluation of Electronic resources on quarterly basis to see our return on the financial investment the university pays for their annual subscription.
I first learnt about Open Access in 2016 at the Open Access to Legal Knowledge in Africa organized by IFLA-Law Section that happened in Uganda on 6th – 7th December 2016. It empowered us to use the Open access legal sources in research and assist each other in practical legal research questions and establish contact with colleagues from different countries.
Since then, I have been able to share many open access online resources to many library patrons and got involved in Open access institutional repositories and policy drafting. I know the value of open resource sharing and the disadvantage of putting resources / research behind walls. It was confusing to me the difference between open research
and open science and open data policy and to date their some issues I need clarity on.
This workshop comes at a time when there are questions I have a person and reservations about Open Science
Doesn’t open science contravene open access policy especially when an institution like BSU does not have a patent?
Won’t Open science interfere with research integrity e.g. (Release of medical personal data). It could also facilitate misuse of research results e.g. (biological weapons)
In the absence of a national research monitoring body wont research groups generates knowledge with their own resources use this knowledge to get economic benefits for themselves?
Who will fund the research and publication activities in Open Science?
How will OS help members to accessing repository of other institutions
Who will fund the research and publication activities in Open Science?
Is open science subject specific when it comes to research?
BSU has the Journal of Development, Education and Technology how can this journal be harmonized in Open Science and what is the process?
