E-Resources Use and Reference Management

With the increasing demand for quality information resources to aid quality academic writing and research at university, Busitema University Library has indexed a multitude of quality electronic resources including eBooks, e journals, Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETDs) among others resources to support staff, students and the entire university community in meeting their information needs. To improve their utilization, a series of trainings have been planned to ensure that skills that warrant the effective usage of these resources are imparted to the beneficiaries on the resources.

 

Friday 9th September 2022 was the start of such trainings at the faculty of Science and Education, Nagongera.

In conjunction with the faculty of Science and Education Graduate Programme, the Library conducted a users’ training for the Masters of Education Students at the Tororo study Centre.

The training addressed issues around:

1.    E Resources access and use

·         Identifying Relevant Databases for e Resources

·         Formulating search queries

·         Evaluating search results

·         Download and saving electronic resources

·         Personal Information Management

·         Off campus Access

 

The training focused on both subscribed and open access databases indexed by Busitema University library.

Although open access sites are accessible everywhere with limited restrictions, Students were informed that subscribed e resources can only be accessed if authenticated access in established.

For some databases Usernames and passwords could be used while others would require IP authentication.

Students were trained on how to use the MyLOFT (My Library on Finger Tips) authentication to gain access to subscribed e resources while off campus or using private networks.

 

2.    Reference Management Systems: Zotero Reference management systems

In particular, this training looked at using Zotero Reference Management System for quality academic writing.

Students were trained on:

·         Setting up accounts with Zotero

·         Downloading and installing the Reference Manager _ Zotero

·         Installing web connectors and word plugins

·         Creating libraries in Zotero

·         Populating Zotero Library

·         Adding and editing citations using Zotero

·         Creating and editing a bibliography and List of references

 

The training was facilitated by the campus Librarian Mr. Isaac Mukungu and Library Assistant Mr. Rogers Mukose.
