Library User Stories is a storytelling initiative created to highlight the real experiences of students and other members of the Busitema University community as they use the library. The project gives a voice to our users by allowing them to share how the library supports their learning, research, and personal growth.

Through short video interviews, participants speak openly about:

  • How often they use the library and for what purposes
  • What they appreciate most about the library
  • Memorable experiences they have had while using the library
  • How library services both physical and digital have supported their academic journey
  • The resources they find most useful
  • Their suggestions for improving library services
  • Why they believe every student should make use of the library

Odongo Tukei Ronald, a Masters Student pursuing Sustainable Energy Engineering at Busitema University shares his experience with the Busitema University Library.

Video Transcript

I am Odongo Tukei Ronald, I am in Year 1 pursuing Masters in Sustainable Energy Engineering at Busitema University.

I have a strong background in Chemical Engineering.

How often do you use the Busitema University Library and for what purpose?

I use the library two to three times a week, mostly on weekends and sometimes when I happen to have tests or presentations, physical presentations.

I use the library around three times a week during the week days. Off week days, I can use it on Saturday and Sunday because it is always open as well.

What do you like most about the library?

What I like most, one is it's more convenient. It is conducive in that it's so quiet. When you look at the overall ventilation system of the library, it well ventilated, proper aeration. There is an AC system in that you don't even feel a little bit uncomfortable whenever you are in the library and then secondly, when you look at the services.

The staff that handle the students, they are well organized and they give guidance. Actually my first day to the library I was taken through, I was oriented by one of the library staff members.

They gave me clear instructions, the guidelines, sections that already gives you you the overall structure of the library. What you expect, what you don't know and it even gives you an insight of what was out of your mind.

And then the other thing is the library has very stable power supply. You are always sure of reliability with power in that incase your laptop or phone is out of power, you are not worried about that.

When it comes to the internet connectivity, it's top notch. Always the network is there for the students.

Can you share a memorable experience you have had in the library?

Okay one of my memorable experience is it's one of the first kind libraries I have accessed and they have provisions for discussion rooms for students. So here you can access a discussion room with some of your colleagues, interact freely, not like other libraries where your spaces are confined and then you are narrowed only to reading rooms.

How has the library supported your academic or research work?

Okay, it has supported highly, cause one, I always maximize the small time I have at campus in a quiet environment to concentrate at 100% levels and then E-services, the library has a provision of e-services.

I can still use the library laptops incase mine is faulty or I left it home.

Sometimes I can seek for guidance from technical librarians and they offer help when necessary.

Which library service or resource do you find most useful?

For the digital library it has helped me more in handling and accessing my modules, Some lectures I send them in Learner LMS where I can login and access the modules, assignments and then I can also ably interact with the other E-resources or books that are not physically in the library or that have limited access when I try to download personally.

If you could suggest one improvement, what would it be?

Okay one of the most critical improvement I would suggest is the security, personal equipment security mostly the bags, student bags. I see here we don't have name tags or identification records or bus where a student comes in you give the person a tag to his or her item and then he goes knowing my item is maybe Tag A, I put in this shelf so that he or she cannot confuse or pick someone else's item just to avoid loss of items probably.

Yeah the other improvement would be maybe adjusting on the time, timeframe. Fine it's ample time for students to access over the weekends from 8am up to around 6pm but probably they should adjust also in the beginning of the semester just to cater for postgraduate students who are a little bit stretching with their research to have an extension not like the general students of undergraduate.

Why do you think every student should use the library?

Okay, a library is one of the most important facilities in any institution, educational institution so as a student, one it doesn't only limit you to your class modules but you get interested, you pick interest in exploring other other external sources outside what you've been told so you have a pool of knowledge.

You actually get yourself more than what the lecturers give in class. It gives you an environment to do self learning and then each student has to visit the library more often why?, cause it builds culture. The more you interact with the library sources someone builds more skills and competence when it comes to academic writings with time which impacts on their careers after campus or even in the job field.
