International Open Access Week 2025 - October 20-24, 2025
Rationale for the Localized Theme
This theme moves from the global question of ownership ("Who Owns Our Knowledge?") to a proactive, Busitema-specific statement of purpose. It reflects the university's mandate and the library's unique position by focusing on three key areas:
Our Campuses: Acknowledges the unique multi-disciplinary and mult-campus structure of Busitema (e.g., Busitema, Arapai, Nagongera, Namasagali, Mbale, Pallisa, and Kabwagasi). Each campus generates specialized knowledge — from management sciences, agriculture and engineering to education and health sciences. The theme asks: How can we break down geographical and disciplinary silos to share knowledge across all our campuses?
Our Community: Directly ties knowledge creation to its application: Busitema's research is not done in isolation; it is for and often with the local communities — farmers in Soroti, mining engineers in Tororo, health workers in Mbale, teachers in Nagongera. The theme asks: How do we ensure the communities we serve can access and benefit from the knowledge created here? How can their indigenous knowledge inform our research?
Our Knowledge: Opening Access for Ugandan Solutions: This is the core action. It positions Busitema University as a primary generator of solutions to Ugandan and East African challenges. "Owning" our knowledge means taking responsibility for its dissemination so it can solve local problems, inform national policy, and drive innovation, rather than being locked behind paywalls in international journals.
